It has been such a joy to receive letters from around the world over the holidays, and from such warm places like Florida and California. It did spread some sunshine when we had cold winter days and nights. But now we wake up for soon we will experience the glories of springtime. This past week a beautiful letter came from California. This dear lady faithfully reads the warm thoughts column and it brings many memories of living out here on the prairie near Dolton, when it was a busy city and had a bank and two grocery stores. She shares her memories on the farm, raising her family, teaching school and giving piano lessons to many students. Her retirement now is filled with memories and I hope she writes her story of her life near Dolton to share with her children, grandchildren and others. You are a real inspiration with that wonderful pioneer spirit to keep on keepin on.
I just love to hear the stories about those horse and buggy days. Those must have been some very happy days and nights too. I have heard some interesting stories about the Saturday nights, and the nights the youth would come to the city of Dolton with horse and buggy and managed to return home at the designated hour their parents gave them to be home. Life held many surprises in those days too. And one may find the book "The Tale of the Three Cities" rather interesting if you want to know about the city of Dalton in those good old days. This is a time of the year we begin to hear the voice of the prairie and I am reminded of the poem Margaret Freer wrote and I would like to share it with you.
A Time of Singing. Awake to the glories of springtime, awake to the song of the bird. Across the one sleeping Earth, the stirrings of life are heard. As this time of singing awakens new life in a dormant land. I too would be awakened anew as spring takes me by the hand.
A Bit of Wit: People were happier back in the horse and buggy days, they had a "stable" economy. A letter to your family or friend may bring joy and sunshine into your life and into the life of others. Send that letter to a special someone!
